Breeze: Perth–Makassar Residency

Applications are now open for a Western Australian writer or curator to undertake a two-week research residency in Makassar, Indonesia. 

Hosted by Rumata Artspace and Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM), the residency takes place in the lead-up to the 2027 Makassar Biennale, offering the opportunity to engage with one of Indonesia’s leading contemporary art platforms and connect with artists, curators, writers and cultural practitioners working across the region. 

As part of preparations for the 2027 Makassar Biennale, the selected writer or curator will undertake research for a publication documenting the BREEZE 2024–2026 exchange program. The publication will trace the history of BREEZE, its collaborative processes and the experiences of participating artists, while reflecting on the evolving cultural relationship between Western Australia and Makassar and future directions for artistic exchange.  

The residency provides dedicated time and space for critical reflection, research and writing that explores the historical, cultural and contemporary relationships between Western Australia and Makassar. Through dialogue, exchange and place-based inquiry, the selected participant will contribute to a broader understanding of the longstanding connections between the two regions while helping shape this significant publication and retrospective project.
